The German artist Kurt Schwitters was one of the fathers of modern art but he spent the last three years of his life living in poverty and obscurity in the Lake District.

He has since influenced figures from Sir Peter Blake to Damien Hirst, and he is now the subject of a major exhibition at Tate Britain.
