Seven paintings worth £80 million may have been burnt by a Romanian woman whose son is accused of stealing them, it has emerged.

The masterpieces include London scenes by Claude Monet, as well as works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. One expert said that if they had been destroyed, it would amount to a ‘crime against humanity’.
